Esperon’s Statement

I wish to thank all the people of the 6th district of Pangasinan who have given me their vote in this historic election, especially the women, farmers, youth, tricycle drivers, professionals and retirees. I shall treasure your trust and courage. I may not have garnered enough votes to win, but I hope I have contributed to the debate on what is best for our people.

I would hasten to denounce massive vote buying and bullying of barangay folks to alter the decision of the electorate. I also decry the use of the Tobacco Excise Tax which was supposed to benefit our farmers and their families. Instead, overpriced fertilizer, sprayers and other products became giveaways and tools to directly influence the elections. I now call for an audit of the tobacco excise tax not only in Pangasinan, but in all towns nationwide that were recipients of the P 12.3B excise tax.

As former military officer and cabinet member, I have pushed and supported important projects in the  6th district. In my personal capacity now, I hope to continue serving the interests of Pangasinan.

As I close this chapter in my journey, I wish to thank all those who have wholeheartedly supported me, those who tirelessly sacrificed, and the ones who became my running mates in the different towns.

Very importantly I wish to acknowledge the valiant support and love of my family who took a leave from their jobs to join me in my campaign. Especially Lorna, who lead the medical missions, my brothers and sisters who came from different parts of the world for house to house campaigning, and my sons and daughters who were all over in rallies. You were splendid. I hope to repay you now with a lot of quality time. I love you all.

I saw firsthand how Jun Esperon wholeheartedly accepted the challenge put before him not just by the people of the 6th District of Pangasinan but all those who saw in him the qualities of a humble, sincere, intelligent and dedicated public servant. People willingly and unselfishly gave their support for him knowing that they would not only be replicating the goodness of Jun’s heart but also projecting and magnifying that goodness through his work as a would-be elected official. Casting his lot into that fierce and engaging political contest was a natural result of his training as a soldier, officer and defender of the rights of others.

Unfortunate as it may seem that he failed to win a seat in Congress, it was a great blessing for me and for many others to have experienced for the first time being in the midst of the electrifying and perilous world of politics. It is certainly not for fainthearted people like me! Politicians often say that their greatest reward is seeing people’s faces glow with hope for their future. When a security guard expressed his desire to vote for Jun because he wanted change for his province, I saw that hope and realized what drives worthy politicians on.

I’ve known Jun since high school and would not expect him to slow down just because of a failed political bid. It is more likely that with this initial engagement and the undeserved wounds he might have gotten, he would continue to fight for his right to serve the people,

    Mabuhay ka, Jun Esperon!

It takes patience, it takes commitment, and it comes with plenty of failure along the way. The real test is not whether you avoid this failure, because you won’t. it’s whether you let it harden or shame you into inaction, or whether you learn from it; whether you choose to persevere”. KAYO PO, YOU HAVE MADE YOUR MARK HERE IN OUR HEARTS AND IN EVERY HEART THAT HAS BEEN TOUCHED BY YOUR GENEROSITY..MABUHAY PO KAYO ANG ANG INYONG PAMILYA.
